Judging the Performance of Sublimation Transfer Paper

August 18,2022

Sublimation transfer paper is one of the important consumables for sublimation transfer technology. The quality of the transfer paper determines the quality of the pattern on the substrate to a large extent.

The performance of the sublimation transfer paper can be judged from the following aspects:

  1. Transfer rate

The transfer rate is the most basic and important performance of the thermal sublimation transfer paper. The transfer rate mainly reflects the sublimation of the thermal sublimation ink after transfer. The transfer rate is high, that is, most of the sublimation ink in the transfer paper is effectively sublimated. Currently, there is no standardized test for metastasis rates. At present, some companies test the transfer rate by specifying the ink color block to transfer under standard transfer conditions and measuring the color chromaticity ratio on the transfer paper before and after transfer.

  1. The see-through case

The see-through phenomenon of the sublimation transfer paper refers to the phenomenon that the ink penetrates the base paper through the coating. In most cases, the see-through phenomenon is obvious, and the transfer rate of the sublimation transfer paper will decrease, resulting in poor transfer effects and other phenomena. At present, the see-through of the sublimation transfer paper mainly depends on naked eye observation, and there is no standardized detection method to digitize it.

  1. Drying speed

The drying speed of the sublimation transfer paper refers to the drying speed of the transfer paper after inkjet printing. The fast drying speed not only increases productivity for continuous printing but also reduces print quality problems caused by wet ink. There is currently no standard testing method for drying speed. Currently, the surface hygrometer method is usually used for testing and calculation.

  1. Flatness of paper surface

The flatness of the paper surface directly affects printing production. The transfer paper with poor flatness is easy to rub against the inkjet head in digital inkjet printing, which not only affects the printing quality but also easily causes damage to the nozzle and shortens the service life of the equipment.

  1. Warpage angle

The warping phenomenon is caused by the inconsistency of the stretch ratio between the coated surface and the base paper surface, which will cause inconvenience in feeding the printer, wrinkle after printing, and misalignment of the transfer pattern, which will affect the normal production progress. High-quality sublimation transfer paper generally has a certain anti-warping performance, which reduces the adverse effect of warping on production.

Why is the sublimation transfer paper curled?

The warpage of the sublimation transfer paper is mainly due to the difference in the absorption of moisture in the air between the coated surface and the non-coated surface of the transfer paper, resulting in inconsistent expansion and contraction on both sides. Under normal circumstances, the uncoated surface of the sublimation transfer paper is more likely to absorb moisture, which makes the paper stretch a lot, so it curls toward the coated surface.

To reduce this situation, high-quality transfer paper will also be coated on the back of the paper surface to alleviate the warping problem of the transfer paper.
